Tab Groups

Stack windows from any app into one frame with a tab bar of their own.

Pro

A tab group puts several windows — from the same app or different apps — in one frame, with a tab bar to switch between them.

Create a group

  • Drop one window onto another. Move a window over another one so they mostly overlap and let go. With Auto-Tab on Overlap on (the default), they become a group.
  • Group Overlapping Windows — this shortcut groups the focused window with the windows stacked under it, even when Auto-Tab is off.

To add another window, drop it onto the group the same way, or drag a tab from another group’s bar onto this one.

Tile When Grouping moves a new group made with the shortcut into the half or quarter that fits it best. Groups created by dropping stay where you dropped them.

Use the tab bar

  • Click a tab to switch to it.
  • Drag tabs to reorder them.
  • Drag a tab away from the bar to take that window out of the group.
  • Middle-click a tab to close that window.

The traffic-light buttons on the bar act on the whole group: close all, minimize all, or maximize the group.

Tab shortcuts

None are assigned by default. Set them under Tab Groups → Tab Shortcuts:

Next Tab · Previous Tab · Go to Tab 1–9 · Close Tab · Detach Tab · Disband Tab Group · Group Overlapping Windows

Options

Find these under Tab Groups in the panel.

OptionWhat it does
Bar PositionTop, bottom, left or right of the group. Left and right show icons only.
Bar ThicknessHeight of the bar (or width, on the side).
Yellow ButtonRestore One by One (default) keeps the group and brings back one window at a time. Restore Together brings back the whole group. Minimize & Disband breaks the group up.
After DisbandWhere windows go when you disband a group: Cascade (default) fans them out so each title bar is reachable, Leave in Place keeps them stacked, Restore Positions returns them to where they were before grouping.
Actions That Don’t Auto-TabWindow actions that never group the window they move. Almost Maximize is on this list by default.

A group disbands on its own when only one window is left in it.

Apps that can’t be grouped

A few apps fight external window control, so ClickFit never groups them: Passwords, System Settings, Preview, and web apps installed from Chrome or Edge.
